Survival water is directly associated with survival food planning. The two go hand in hand but water is by far more essential to survival than food.

While the human body can go without food for days and even weeks, it can only go several days without water. Hunger pains can torment us but lack of water will kill us.

Just as lack of water can kill us, so can contaminated water.

Finding Survival Water

Many animals and forms of life must have water to survive. If you are desperately looking for water and you see bees or pigeons, for example, you know you are close to SOME source of water.

But even then, one drop of contaminated water can make you so sick that you will be too weak to travel any further.

We have drank water from waterfalls gushing out the side of a mountain many times and never gotten sick…but are much more cautious about drinking water from a stream or creek bed. Don’t let a clear stream fool you as you have no idea what may be upstream. There could be a rotting deer carcass lying in the creek!

There is the age old rule that stands true, though…a lively bubbling stream cleans itself in 30 feet of flowing over rocks and sands

It is an old folks tale that will tell you that anything a dog drinks from is safe… they drink from TOILETS, you know! =)

Smell or lack of smell is nothing you can go by, either. Sulfurous water stinks terribly but if it is boiled or not polluted, it is safe to drink.

Your body can actually build an immunity to certain water pollutions which is why when we travel to foreign countries we can violently sick with one sip of their water while the natives drink it by the gallon and don’t appear to be affected by it at all.

Never take a risk with a questionable water source.

Purifying Survival Water

You can get rid of most germs in water by simply boiling it, if you have the means to do so. How long depends on the elevation and how contaminated it is, etc, but a good rule of thumb is ten minutes.

No need to boil any longer than that. Boiling it longer will only evaporate precious water and burn up your fuel source.

Ten minutes even when you are in a hurry is much better than spending weeks or months trying to get better again. There is not much else that can get you as violently sick as contaminated water can.

There are also water purifier systems that can be bought online and stuck into a survival pack but a small kettle is a basic means of making sure you have good survival water to drink and cook with.

Boiled water tastes quite flat and if you pour it back and forth between several containers or buckets, it will add some air and flavor back into it or if you are in a hurry, add a pinch of salt to it.

It is better to drink lots of tea than to go without enough water to drink just because it doesn’t taste so great!

You do not need to be a Houdini to make water from air. You just need to know how to make condensation work for you. And because water is so critical for survival, knowing these tricks is well worth anyone’s time.

Make Plants Condense the Water For You

This technique will not provide all the water you need to survive, but it will certainly extend how long you can survive until help comes. Generally people can live for three days without water, but if you are on an island, for example, the sun and wind will dry you out faster than if you were in a cool cave. That said, if you happen to be stranded without water but you are surrounded by trees or bushes and you have a few plastic bags, you can get the trees to give you some of their water.

Trees pull water from deep underground — deeper than you could dig — and they expirate some of that water out through their leaves. If you put a plastic bag over a small branch you can actually collect water droplets as the tree breathes out the water. Each 12 inch square plastic bag will get you a only tablespoon of water or two each day. As a liter is 68 tablespoons, and you need about five liters a day, that does mean that you would need roughly 200 bags to stay well-hydrated. That’s definitely more plastic bags than a person would normally carry around, but when there is no other water available, even a tablespoon is most welcome.

Make a Solar Still

This will work anywhere, but if you are in a place where the days are hot and the nights are cold then it will work even better. Each solar still you make can generate about a pint of water a day, so if you have no other water source, that means you will need to make eight to twelve of these stills to get to the four to six liters of water a day that are usually required in survival situations.

One way to have that much plastic on hand is to carry ten large garbage bags in your backpack. Garbage bags can be unbelievably handy in the outdoors. They can be a poncho, a sleeping bag, a tent footprint, a signal, a trap and a water catchment system. Oh, yeah — and a trash bag. That’s quite a lot of use for less than an ounce of weight for each bag. For solar stills, you want a plastic bag sheet (you cut the bag on two sides to create an extra large sheet of plastic) that is about 36 inches square. If one side of the plastic is less smooth, put that side down. The extra surface area makes a difference.

To make the still, dig a shallow hole 18 inches deep and 36 inches wide. Put a pan down in the center of the hole. If you don’t have a pan you can also make a pan out of a sheet of plastic covering a dug-out part of the bottom of the hole. Weigh the top plastic sheet down at the edges with rocks and then very, very carefully, drop a large pebble in the center of the plastic sheet to create a low point. Your dish needs to be under the low point, so it can collect the water droplets as they condense and roll down the sheet.

One of the best things about a solar still is that you can use semi-polluted water. That’s because the water you will be drinking has evaporated and condensed, purifying itself. If you are at the beach, you could even set a still up in the high sand and distill the salt water into drinking water.

One of the best methods of purifying water is the distillation process. It all begins with a heat source that vaporizes water causing it to become steam. As the steam cools and condenses back into water the contaminants are separate out due to boiling point differences. The result? Crystal clear, perfect water.

Don’t be fooled into thinking that your drinking water is pure just because it comes from a well, spring, glacier, or other location that is considered to be pure. That’s not the case. All naturally-occurring water has things in it we don’t need to be drinking.

The distillation process takes untreated water (also referred to as raw) and heats it to the boiling point where it starts to vaporize. The trick to getting 100 percent pure water is to maintain the water at a constant temperature and keep the vaporization process going. It’s at this constant temperature that the separation of contaminants takes place; while the water is vaporizing, the other elements you don’t want in your water are NOT vaporizing, due to differences in their boiling points.

The removal of the elements you don’t want in your water is made possible because the harmful minerals and compounds in water either have a lower boiling point than water itself, or a higher boiling point. Taking advantage of these differences is what enables us to distill–to separate– water from these undesirable compounds. The separation process also applies to disease organisms. Although so small you can’t see them, they are eliminated out of the boiling water so they can’t pollute your end product – the purified drinking water.

When the water is vaporized in the distillation process, the steam is funneled into a condenser where the water converts back to its liquid form. As it collects, the fluid gathers in a container. The remainder that didn’t vaporize is referred to as sediment, and it stays in the original container that held the water prior to its vaporization. To be certain of clean water one can re-run the water back through the unit to ensure all other foreign elements have been removed.

Depending on the kind of water distillation system you have, you may not need to repeat the process. In an interesting note, the units used to distill many liquors (such as gin, brandy, and whiskey) are similar to the units commonly used to distill water.

Currently the conventional method to heat the water is electricity or gas, but that hasn’t stopped evergreen proponents from proposing solar power. While a viable alternative, it would take a great deal longer to vaporize water and only in smaller quantities.

It’s odd to see how damaging water can be, both through natural disasters and also through drinking dirty water. Both an overabundance of water and a lack of water can be deadly. With the horrible flooding taking place right now in Pakistan, we see that too much water is just as deadly as a lack of clean water, which kills hundreds daily worldwide. One way or another, water is the largest issue facing mankind today. Were you aware that a lack of clean water is the largest killer of human being on planet earth? Most people are unaware, and equally unaware of what can be done, if anything, to correct this problem. Well one thing which can be done is to implement solar water distiller technology. Many experts scoff at this kind of technology because it only uses evaporation to clean water instead of more modern filtration methods. But sometimes that’s the best you can do.

What is a solar water distiller? A solar water distiller is basically a triangular box with a glass pane enclosing the top. When this box is filled with dirty water and put out into the sun, the glass causes a greenhouse effect and the water heats up and begins to evaporate very quickly. Then, as the water collects and condenses on the glass, it slides down and is gathered and delivered into a jug.

Opponents to this kind of technology say that the water that comes out of the solar water distiller isn’t ever really cleaned and therefore isn’t viable for human use. But just consider the alternative. If all the humans have to drink prior to this is the dirty water, then surely running that same dirty water through a solar water distiller can’t hurt. There are many expensive water filtration systems out there, and many of them have filters that need to be changed often.

The solar water distiller isn’t the same. It’s very easy to construct, mostly just wood and a pane of glass, and it doesn’t use any filter at all, just natural evaporation. Nature cleans the water itself. It doesn’t need any fancy devices. While living in the country of Cambodia for a year, I would often buy unripe coconuts and drink the water locked inside. The water in Cambodia wasn’t often very clean but inside the green coconut lay about a pint of fresh, nutrient rich water that nature had cleaned on its own and locked away inside the coconut. Over in Cambodia, buying an unripe coconut cost about five cents at the time. A clean bottle of water was twenty five cents. So you decide which is more economical for poor countries.

Man made filtration is excellent. It’s only downfall is its cost. Solar water distillation is a cheap way to give a pretty decent amount of filtration to otherwise dirty drinking water. Especially when used in times of a disaster, such as the flooding going on currently in Pakistan, solar water distillation ought to be used to give people some access to clean water. And even though solar water distillers can be used for personal use, they can also be constructed on a grand scale, many many feet wide and long, for mass purification of water. I hope in the future, they’ll be given a second look by governments and aid organization.
